Miller and Smith Jr combine for 59, not enough as Hornets losing streak stretches to 6

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The Hornets' somber Summer League performances came to a halt, but they still couldn't come away with the W.

With third-overall pick, Scoot Henderson watching from the sideline, Miller showed why the Hornets chose him, posting a remarkable 15 points on 5-7 shooting in the first half alone. That said, he was closely followed by 27th-selection Nick Smith Jr, who had 13 points, including a perfect 3 for 3 from three-pointers, and the Hornets went into the break down 5.

In the third, Miller continued his dominance, adding 8 points, including 2 threes, to stretch his tally to 23 points by the end of the period. The Hornets were still on the wrong side of a two-point deficit, but had all the momentum in their hands after a 12-2 run.

In the fourth, it was the Nick Smith Jr show, as he showed the league exactly why he should not have fallen in the draft. He notched 16 points in an array of remarkable assaults on Portland's defense. He hit them from everywhere; from three, from the midrange, and from in the post. It was as if the rest of the players were all in slow motion.

The game came down to the wire, and Portland decided to intentionally foul Nick Smith Jr, to make sure the Hornets weren't able to end the possession with 3 points in hand. As he headed to the line, an extremely loud child began to scream, so loudly so, that you could clearly hear it through the TV. This no doubt affected Nick Smith's focus, and he bricked the first free throw, to more or less end the game.

The Hornets now look to their final Summer League game, against the New Orleans Pelicans. The game will be on the 13th at 7:30P.M eastern time.
