Last year, we finnished with 27 wins. 14th in the eastern conference. We are a young, talented (yet untapped) team. But that's doesn't matter. We won just 32% of our games. If we were a play-in team, ready to make a name for our self? That's when you go fit over talent. But we weren't and we aren't. We are the 14th. We aren't good enough yet to pass on talent on the basis of fit. Just ask team owner, Michael Jordan, what happens when you take fit over talent at pick 2. Better yet, ask the Portland Trailblazers.
Scoot is a young, dynamic scorer, with the potential to be an elite playmaker. His IQ and vision are great, his finishing better. And now he has a jumpshot coming along? Come on. This has to be the pick, right?
Despite question marks around his spacing capabilities, I truly believe Scoot can be a long range scorer in this league. Not an elite shooter, but good enough to keep the defence honest, similar to Memphis guard Ja Morant. His form is pretty, he shoots 76% from the free throw line, and just 46% of his points come from in the paint. He has shown that when he can't quite attack the rim, he can easily settle for a mid ranger, and he usually makes it. He only shoots 26% from 3, but he shoots 38% from three with a defender closing out. What does that show? He's getting into his own head. He needs more confidence in his shot. And Charlotte is the perfect place to build that, giving we are a good few years from a potentially competing.
Finnally, Scoot has something Barandon Miller doesn't-the intangibles. He's was the leader- as an 18 year old- of a team full of veterans. He was their go-to in the clutch, and has shown time and time again he isn't afraid of the big moments, with an impressive array of game winners, clutch stops, and 'daggers' through his two seasons with the NBA's development team.
Scoot is the pick, no if's, and's or but's about it. We aren't good enough to get picky. We lucked out -and potentially changed the next decade or more of this teams future- in the lottery. We were handed a gift. Now it's time to put on an awkward smile, give an awkward hug, say thank you, and get back to the grind.
